There are a lot of different bets you can make when betting on most sports such as soccer, football, hockey, baseball, basketball and others as well. Once you start gaining experience in betting on the sport or sports of your choice you might want to venture away from the traditional bet types into more unconventional types of bets. In this article we’re going to look at the different bets you can make on most sporting events online with the sportsbook of your choice.
Straight Bets
A straight bet is simply betting on one team to beat the other team in an event. You’ll need to risk a bit of juice on straight bets, but there the best bets for beginners. There are also other bets that you can place such as point spreads or point totals. The payout is determined based on the line at the time you make your wager, if the line is -110 this means you’ll need to risk $1.10 for every $1 winnings.
Moneyline Bet
Moneyline bets are also common for beginner bettors as well because you only need to pick the winning team without any spread involved. Most sports have spreads, but you can choose the moneyline if you don’t want to worry about the spread. The only downfall of moneyline bets is that if you want to take a favourite and the line is -200 then you’d need to risk $2 for every $1 in potential winnings.
Point Spread Bet
When you bet on the point spread you need to choose whether or not the team will win by a certain amount of points. Most sports have point spreads that you can wager on although these are harder to win usually then moneyline bets. If a team is favourite by -5.5 then you need to choose whether or not the team will win by 6. If you think they will you’d choose the team and if you think they won’t then you’d choose the other team known as the underdog.
Point Totals Bet
In most sports you can bet on the total points scored in the game by choosing under or over a predetermined amount of points. In the NFL for instance a typical point total for a game is 44.5 points so you need to choose whether the game will have 45 points or less. Based on your decision you’d bet on the over or under on that game. Payouts are -110 so it’s like any typical payout.
Parlays
A parlay is when you bet on multiple events on one ticket with the chance to increase your profit potential. The minimum amount of games you can choose is 2 and the more games you wager on the higher percentage you’ll get paid out if it wins. Betting on multiple events obviously makes it more difficult to win, but you can risk minimal amounts to win large amounts which is the upside. I usually always bet a parlay on a couple games for a small amount and larger amounts on moneyline and point spread bets.
